The highest peak in Thailand

National park, waterfalls, pagodas and hill tribes

The highest peak in Thailand
The highest peak in Thailand

Join our budget trip in Doi Inthanon National Park and discover the nature of the highest peak in Thailand. You start with the ascent to the summit, where you can walk along the peaceful nature trail of Ang Ka Luang: a dense evergreen forest. The summit is cool and damp all year, and in December and January the temperature can drop to around 0 degrees, so bring a warm layer.

From there you continue to the King and Queen pagodas, surrounded by landscaped gardens and panoramic viewpoints, and to the Wachirathan and Siriphum waterfalls.

The adventure does not end with nature: the Hmong market with handicrafts and fresh produce, and the White Karen village, known for its craftsmanship and traditions.

The highest peak

Elevation of 2,565 meters above sea level, and the Ang Ka Luang nature trail.

The King's and Queen's pagodas

Built in honor of their 60th birthdays, in landscaped gardens with a panoramic view.

Waterfalls

Wachirathan, whose waters flow from a height of about 80 meters, and Siriphum.

Hill tribes

The Hmong market and the White Karen village.

When to go

Winter in the north, from mid-October to mid-February, is the cool and dry period according to the Thai Meteorological Department, and December and January are the coldest, with temperatures that can fall below freezing on mountain peaks in the north. The Tourism Authority of Thailand links the sea of mist at Doi Inthanon to the misty mornings of the cooler months. The rainy season runs from mid-May to mid-October.

Getting there

  • The national park is about 90 minutes' drive from the city, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (2021).

Good to know

On the Ang Ka trail stay on the wooden boardwalk, because the moss is sensitive.

After floods the park closes trails and waterfalls until the staff confirm that it is safe to return. The situation changes from day to day.

About the place

The moss is sensitive, so stay on the wooden boardwalk and do not cross the barriers.
