That is also why most travellers come to the area with a vehicle or as part of an organised route, and do not rely on local transport.

What our routes in the area include

Among the points that appear in our northern routes: Pai Canyon, the hot springs, Lod Cave, where you float on bamboo rafts, and the bamboo bridge that crosses rice fields.

Alongside these there is also the Kiew Lom viewpoint, tribal villages along the border with Myanmar, and orchid farms.

The White Buddha

The white statue overlooking the Pai valley is one of the points you can see from everywhere in town. The way up is by stairs, and the view from the top explains why everyone climbs it.

River activity

The area has rafting on the Mae Taeng river, which also appears in our northern routes, and that is the active alternative to a day of viewpoints and cafés.

Tribal villages, and how to visit them properly

A visit to a tribal village appears in almost every northern route, including ours. It is a real chance to be exposed to another culture, but it demands the behaviour of a guest, not a spectator.

Ask before photographing people, buy from the people themselves rather than just taking photos, and do not treat the village as a backdrop. The difference between a visit and a peek is mainly in the approach.

How to build a day

Pai does not reward cramming. Two or three stops a day, with time to sit in between, suit the character of the place much better than a list of six.

This is also the place where most people discover they wanted to stay another day. If there is flexibility in the route, it is worth leaving it here rather than at the next destination.

What to pack

The northern mountains are cooler than the south, especially in the morning and the evening, and the viewpoints are exactly at those hours. One warm layer in your bag solves that.

Closed shoes are better than flip-flops for anything that involves a cave, a waterfall or rice terraces: the paths there are not always paved.
